The concept of must-haves is one that’s really yet to take off in men’s
fashion. There’s no equivalent of the LV ‘spicy’ sandal (remember that?), Mulberry’s Bayswaters and Alexas or Hermes’ Birkin.
Never one to cast aspersions, MENSWEAR would like to propose an ideal candidate for the post. We’d feel a lot better if every man in the world sported a pair of Marni’s AW 10 brothel boots. Why?
a. The polished leather
b. The amazing colours- burgundy, teal etc
c. Crepe soles! These are going to be everywhere quite soon…
d. Marni is having what’s known as a ‘moment’ right now, i.e. despite not being as flashy as Lanvin or anything, the clothes are really pushing certain directional buttons without looking trashy or un-manly. Like the excellent leather visors below.
Well done Marni!

It’s nice to see Marni still pushing things forward and taking risks. I suppose I say ‘risk’ because I don’t actually like these boots (that sole is nuts!), but that’s not really the point and they’re so on trend it’s daft.
It’s interesting how we don’t have ‘must haves’. Do you think this is because Men’s fashion is slower in moving forward/less trend driven than Women’s? We defo have ‘wardrobe staples’ (or at least I think we do and am doing something on this soon) but we certainly don’t have the absolute ‘YOU HAVE TO HAVE THIS ITEM’ that the girls do season after season.
The definition of ‘must-have’ is the important bit. I think there are rapidly becoming more items men ‘have to have’, i.e:
-cardigans
-deck shoes
-skinny jeans
-backpacks
-brogues
etc etc. But as to specific trend items from specific design houses I hope it’s something we see more of. There’s so many alternate-universe men’s ‘classics’ that I think aren’t appreciated or lost in the sands of time- like Raf Simons’ Lego/Mondrian style boots, Prada’s patent shorts and jackets from a few seasons ago or even Gucci’s carpet bags.
I totally agree on that list of items as recent semi trend driven ‘have to have’ items but at the same time we’re nowhere near the level women are.
I’d also agree there are many items that will retrospectively be seen as classic items – the RAF Mondrian boots as you say, and also many of Margiela’s pieces have/will become modern classics.
I have my own must have items but they’re not led by fashion, more traditional items that I think I should/want to own. I bought a pair of Lodger brogues today. I’m hoping to get 20 years+ out of them. They’re my kind of ‘must have’ item.
I totally agree. I think brogues are on my list, though I’ve always been partial after seeing them in an old Saint Etienne concert poster. They make me think of the Mister Men too… but I’m sure at some point the brogue will fall from fashion again. Who knows what we’ll have to shod our feet in then
oh my god! I absolutely love these but where online can one buy them from! I cant find them anywhere?
They’re next seasons- A/W 10- so I assume will be online at both the Marni website and The Corner (www.thecorner.com) from about July or August. That’s if they go into production! Fingers crossed…
Try http://www.thecorner.com Robert! Hopefully they’ll make it into production…
